Understanding the criteria for the Bill of Packaging material (BOPM)

bill of packaging materials (BOPM) is a comprehensive inventory of the packing materials, primary, secondary, tertiary, and ancillary components, as well as the quantities of each needed to produce a product.
A BOPM is seldom also related to as a product structure, or production recipe to make a product packaging.
An outlined BOPM helps organizations:
  • Plan purchases of packing materials
  • Estimate packing material costs
  • Gain inventory control
  • Track and plan packing material requirements
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Assure supply robustness and reduce waste
BOM structure of packaging material
Typically, a BOM is hierarchical, with the finished product at the top. It includes product codes, technical name(Chemical name), Generic name (generally for Pharma), Product name (Food and others), part descriptions, quantities, costs, and additional specifications.
Methods for Calculating the BOM:
Generally, two ways:
  1. Calculating through Single Box packing
  2. Calculating through bulk packing
  1. Single Box packing:  Many companies preferring to make the BOPM – Bill of packaging material with a single Box packing. Through which whole batch packing estimated accurately to make the purchase activity.
  2.  Bulk packing:- Many food and pharmaceutical companies calculate with count/numbers through their particular consideration.  For Example: If a product to be packed 100kL and the calculation shall be based on 1000L or 100L, it should be standardized across all the products.
If it is a product in solid or powder form, it would be a number of counts and kilograms for the packing list.
We need to be required information for the preparation of the bill of packaging material.
Generally for the header:
  1. Date – Preparation date
  2. Bill of Packing number – log sheet number (Unique number)
  3. Product code – Unique code
  4. Technical/Product name – name description
  5. Revision number – in case of revision
Calculation part
The packaging material should be started either from the outer packaging or primary packaging. That will help with the easy calculation.
And estimation required for the roll form packing materials, such as pouches, blister rolls, strapping, taping, etc. because the exact calculation would be complicated.
Let’s take an example of the packaging of tablets in a bottle. Few assumptions required to understand like 60nos of tabs in a bottle, and that’s 20nos. of filled bottles in a box.
In a pharmaceuticals companies usually make the BOPM with having 1Lacs of Tablets. And all the calculation is based on the number.
  1. Primary packaging – Bottle, labels, and closure required for the 1L tab with a 60nos. of count – 100000/60= 1667nos. + excess + wastage (varies with company machinery and waste )
  2. Secondary Packaging – Boxes and labels 1167/20=84nos. + excess + wastage
  3. An ancillary item like tape – double length of the box
