A Challenge for the companies to make a sensory straw for a unique experience by Nestle
There’s nothing really like Nestlé Milo for the young age in various countries around the world. A big part of its progress is that there’s nothing quite like Milo’s unique sensory straw, with its intelligent modification in design presenting a unique drinking experience.
However, the popular Milo straw is plastic, and Nestlé is substituting plastic straws with paper items. But we don’t need to take apart the fun for growing Milo drinkers in the process.
The challenge
We see for associates to assist us in designing an entirely new sensory straw made of paper or some other recyclable non-plastic material that will be even further appealing than its plastic predecessor. A straw that will give the unique Milo drinking experience: the fun, the taste, and aroma that kids love so much.
We do not want straw-less packaging, re-usable, flavored, edible straws, or anything that will transform Milo’s actual taste or smell. Nor are we looking for a solution that applies the straw into a toy.
Success criteria
We want creative designs for a straw design that will enhance the Milo drinking experience, ideally displayed via a functional concept or prototype which can:
– Be assigned and sold with an aseptic carton 180-200ml
– Deliver a sensory experience during product consumption
– Be produced cost-effectively and in vast quantities
– Be fully recyclable
It should also be different and patentable, machinable, easy to apply, and capable of meeting stringent food and child safety criteria. The ideal submission should describe why you have decided on the specific material, recycling, composting, and sustainability features. Explain why your idea will make it such a pleasure to drink for the target group of children (aged 6- 12 years old). Consumer tests will be conducted in our pilot market in Vietnam to validate acceptability.

Why it matters
Plastic straws are a worldwide dilemma. They are challenging to convert, and most don’t disintegrate or biodegrade when they are finished with. Those that end up in landfills or the sea can be there for hundreds of years. More and more customers are uneasy about buying single-use plastic products. If we can find a plan to make paper straws just as easy to use as plastic straws, the public will be happier to play their part in dealing with this pressing issue.
