Samsung has defined its mobile packaging with Eco-Conscious Packaging

Samsung Eco friendly Packaging

Samsung is committed to delivering its users products and services designed to make their everyday more epic. A vital part of this responsibility is providing people with innovations that preserve the planet and save our natural resources.

They work on three packaging design principles – reduce, replace, and recycle; these directions have shown the eco-conscious modifications to the Galaxy S series packaging. From the amount of packaging to the materials used, Samsung has simplified product packaging and implemented more sustainable processes.

From Galaxy S7 To Galaxy S21: A Way for More Eco-Conscious Packaging

Launched the Galaxy S7 in 2016, Samsung has designed more eco-conscious packaging with each generation of the Galaxy S series. Throughout this expedition, they had worked diligently to extract elements that could stand in the way of people efficiently recycling their product packaging after purchase.

The packaging for the Galaxy S21 series has just 4% of the plastic used in the Galaxy S7 packaging; decreasing waste yielded per packaging unit by 49%. Similarly, the Galaxy S21 packaging has just 58% of the paper utilized in the Galaxy S7, saving some 44,802 trees a year. As a development of these persisted sustainability actions, they had reduced the amount of carbon developed during the making of the Galaxy S21 series’ packaging by 50%, corresponding to that of the Galaxy S7.

Following ample research into eco-conscious materials, the Galaxy S8’s packaging noticed several transitions compared to the previous Galaxy S series. They removed the magnet from inside the packaging and the plastic in-box case for earphones, and the accessory tray – traditionally composed of plastic – was assembled with paper-based material.

For the Galaxy S9, we made an additional push towards decreasing plastic waste. Samsung modified the device tray material from plastic to a pulp-mold material, incorporating upcycled materials into the process.

For the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20, Samsung developed eco-conscious changes to packaging. They replaced plastic with paper to tie accessories jointly, streamlined the package format, and incorporated all the packaging trays for in-box accessories into one pulp-mold tray to trim down unnecessary materials. Also, removed the protective film from additions such as the charger plug and the USB connector and changed the coating for all accessories from a shiny finish to a more eco-conscious matte finish that conceals fingerprints and is harder to scratch.

The packaging for the new flagship device, the Samsung S21 packaging series, is the most eco-conscious product packaging within the Galaxy S series. Instead of rigid paper, every box for the device is made with corrugated cardboard to improve recyclability. Removed Accessories such as the charger plug and in-box earphones to minimize the amount of packaging further and promote reuse and recycling habits among Galaxy users.

Promoting Resource Efficiency Into the Future – Samsung trade in packaging

Despite occurring challenges around the availability of sustainable materials and productivity of international supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsung still commits to helping combat climate change and save the environment in everything they do.

At the end of 2020, they earned the goal of using 100% recycled or sustainably sourced paper packaging and now need paper suppliers to submit certifications and conform to global standards, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. They acknowledge that the journey to shifting to a fully circular economy is not over.
