Avery Dennison has completed “OK Compost certification” for a BPA-free and FSC®-certified thermal label material. It is coupled with the brand new adhesive SX6030, giving brands new choices to more sustainable packaging.
Ok Compost certified label
Jennifer Bijkerk, a Development Engineer, said that the new material addresses a significant shortfall in supply for compostable thermal materials. The Demand for sustainable thermal labels is vast, including compostable labels, and the European EN13432 standard imposes stringent requirements before TUV Austria can award OK Compost’ certification.
Under product reference BW099 (Thermal Ecois BPA Free FSC SX6030-BG40WH FSC), this new material uses a unique facestock/adhesive combination to ensure a robust and practical content that needs no special storage conditions and which has a healthy shelf life. The composting standards are limited. The EN13432 is also accepted as a compostability standard in many countries outside of Europe.
Compost label for food application
The main application for BW099 will be labeling compostable food packaging and compostable plastic bags, especially last-minute directly printed labels for fruit and vegetables that are weighted and packed by the consumers in the supermarket.
The single-use plastics also means there is a drive towards using compostable carrier bags and other packaging. All of these required a compostable label. Public opinion on this issue and composting being a potential solution. These are underlined by the Global Commitment and introduce by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and UN Environment in October 2018.
Avery Dennison is one and more than 250 businesses supporting this idea working with governments, NGOs, universities, and other organizations. To eliminate plastic waste and pollution.
Luuk Zonneveld, a Product Manager who Select Solutions and said that the new material is available in 2m width and with an optimized production efficiency to support the market’s broader demands. We know how relevant this product category is to converters and end-users.
We see it as a critical contributor to our own, more comprehensive, and highly ambitious sustainability goals. We have been able to use technology to produce this innovation by creating a unique facestock/adhesive combination. Work is gone well underway towards expanding our compostable range with more certified products.
