Innovative BOPE film for frozen food packaging by SABIC

Innovative Packaging Solution for the Frozen Packaging

SABIC is a global leader in diversified chemicals, has announced a sustainable packaging solution for frozen food, which combines a new polyethylene (PE) grade with innovative film production technology.

TF-BOPE film thickness

Compared to standard blow PE film solutions, it offered significantly bigger throughput and has the potential for down-gauging, making it beautiful from both a commercial and sustainability viewpoint.

The clarification is based on a mono web TF-BOPE film formation with a thickness of only 20 micrometers, an unparalleled advantage in this market. This thin gauge gives a potential packaging material reduction of around 35-50% compared to incumbent blown PE film. The compressed thickness of the packaging solution reduces environmental impact and encourages brand owners and retailers to reduce their packaging material consumption.

100% recyclable Monomaterial PE film

The latest packaging solution is also 100% recyclable and implements mono-PE recycling streams. This innovative packaging solution for frozen food results.

SABIC collaboration with Ticinoplast and Plastchim-T

SABIC’s close association with film suppliers/extruders Ticinoplast and Plastchim-T and the packaging machine produced Syntegon Technology.

Stephan Eltink, SABIC Business Director for PE in Europe, said, “At SABIC, we concentrate on delivering sustainable clarifications and working collaboratively with our customers to help them achieve their objectives and explain key industry challenges. By working intimately with Ticinoplast, Plastchim-T, and Syntegon, and by leveraging our innovation together, we have been ready to offer a new solution to the market that provides for more sustainable packaging without any compromise on productivity and customer satisfaction.”

Pierre Hamelink, who Syntegon’s Director of Business, Market, and Sustainability Strategy, said: “This innovative packaging solution demonstrates the real value of collaboration. Stakeholders completely, the supply chain has had to work together to bring this to life: sustainability cannot be accomplished single-handedly.” He continued: “Our research and development efforts are driven by our mission to deliver sustainability without the settlement. Our brand-new PHS 2.0 sealing technology can prepare thinner films while allowing sealing quality, product protection, and processing speed as standard sealing technologies. When substituting composite packaging materials on new and subsisting Syntegon machines with films made of SABIC BOPE, brand purchasers benefit from even more material and cost savings.”

Performance of BOPE film

the TF-BOPE film produced by SABIC LLDPE BX202 material allows to tear direction, and low tear strength presents an easy unidirectional opening.

Aesthetics design

Compared to conventional solutions, it provides much better visibility of packaged products due to more extraordinary light transmission and more tropical haze while the high gloss delivers first-class design and aesthetics.

Less thickness with PHS 2.0 sealing technology

The 20-micrometer thin film was famously experimented on Syntegon’s vertical form, fill and seal machines, emphasizing the newly developed PHS 2.0 sealing technology. This technology decreases the amount of clamped film by 25 percent and improves packaging speed by 25 percent. The thin TF-BOPE film also required less cooling time, which increases packaging speed even more. Through the evaluations, a constant speed of 130 bags per minute was achieved.

High Speed with Robust Sealing

The TF-BOPE film delivers a robust sealing completion and increased productivity resulting from improved packaging speed for packers. The thin gauge results in improved film roll efficiency, decreasing logistic handling, storage space, and transport costs.

Printing Stability

For the converters and brand owners, SABIC’s TF-BOPE film material provides a wide range of benefits: good printability, cost-saving opportunities and higher yield, less consumption of plastic materials, and lower packaging taxes reduced material consumption. It further degrades the package weight to product weight ratio, resulting in a more optimized packaging design.

Grade of TF-BOPE film

The TF-BOPE film is based on the SABIC LLDPE BX202 standard, which is accessible globally. TF-BOPE stands for Tenter Frame Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene. This is a PE category that can run in tenter frame machines traditionally used to make Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene film. TF-BOPE has the potential to be applied in original applications and markets which help the circular economy, where mono-material solutions are needed to enhance recyclability. TF-BOPE can substitute multi-material laminates into a mono-PE structure.

Recyclability defines by TRUCIRCLE™ solutions

SABIC TF -BOPE polymer is part of the “Design for Recyclability” under TRUCIRCLE solutions that support easy and full recyclability by enabling mono-PE material structure multilayer tenter frame of flexible packaging, aiming to minimize waste. This new product can also be available as a certified circular polymer from its TRUCIRCLE portfolio. At SABIC, the TRUCIRCLE initiative encompasses the companies’ circular materials and technologies, including approved circular polymers from the chemical recycling of various plastic waste and certified renewable polymers based on bio-based renewable feedstock.
