Teknos develops an innovative bio-based barrier for recyclable paper bottle

The packaging and food business is going through a significant change in the usage of plastic. Packaging enterprises are continually watching for more sustainable, recyclable and options to replace the usage of plastic packaging.

So, Teknos, a coatings company, is advancing barrier coatings for the food packaging business.

It is a part of a paper bottle community that combines a group of the world’s leading brands and specialists in material, design, and technology. Teknos is committing to the introduced first of its kind bio-based bottle with a recycling property.
The paper bottle designed for carbonated & regular beverages.
Teknos has a history of developing operative coatings for various surfaces and substances. It is only natural to apply this know-how in other applications besides traditional painting. A thin film of plastic coats on paper and paperboard applied in food packaging: water-based diffusions restrict water or grease penetrating the paper and are excellent for food content, says Tuomas Aspiala, Group Commercial Manager, Teknos.
Today, the paper bottle manufactured from sustainably sourced paper, blended with regular barrier coating technology. The further step in the transition to a complete bottle solution, including a bio-based barrier. In the extended term, the paper bottle will transform entirely bio-based.
Paboco®, the paper bottle company, is a joint venture between paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle making specialist ALPLA. The intention is to give users a wholly bio-based and recyclable paper bottle, that eventually could change the industry and reshape the environment for good. The advancement started in 2015 by innovation start-up ecoXpac in collaboration with Carlsberg Group and BillerudKorsnäs.
Innovations are at the center of Teknos’ operations. Best innovations are usually a result of cooperation with other innovative technology companies. For paper bottle design, Teknos is working jointly with Swedish surface treatment company Crescocito.
– Teknos are continuously advancing to find unique and innovative solutions for the everchanging requirements of customers, partners, and the environment. Partnerships and cooperation are crucial for new and innovative ideas. This is how we can come up with something truly unique and meaningful to make the world last longer, says Aspiala.
