ICON® packaging— a recyclable ice cream packaging

To complete the growing need for sustainable packaging options in North America, Huhtamaki presented ICON® packaging— a creative, recyclable ice cream packaging.

Produced from 95% renewable biobased material, ICON® packaging incorporates Huhtamaki’s proprietary water-based barrier coating with SFI-certified paperboard. It allows customers in North America to recycle ice cream containers and lids like other paper products, such as folded carton packaging.

With ICON’s wide range of multi-packaging solutions, we can adapt our packaging from a rigid plastic structure and transition it into paper-based formats with eco-friendly barriers without compromising package functionality, such as structural integrity in frozen supply chains. By pioneering and maintaining an eye on vital factors such as condensation resistance, we have demonstrated how paper-based materials can serve as viable alternatives to plastic.

Using paper in ice cream packaging has added advantages for producers, such as more practical options for decorating and shaping packaging or full-cover printing possibilities to aid marketing actions. Meanwhile, consumers can benefit from our Connected Packaging by scanning the QR code on all ICON® packaging products to learn how to recycle after usage.

We developed ICON® solutions through our extensive expertise in barrier functionality and paper forming. As the industry’s first-of-its-kind pioneering advancement in paper packaging technology, ICON’s cutting-edge approach to sustainability demonstrates its ambition as a prominent provider of sustainable packaging solutions.
