HDPE Resins for Oriented Film to Advance a Plastics Circular Economy by Nova Chemicals

NOVA Chemicals Corporation is presenting new resin technology for machine direction oriented (MDO) and biaxially oriented (BO) techniques to assist its consumers and brand owners to meet their sustainability objectives. 

NOVA Chemicals’ innovative technology keeps a significant improvement in pursuing a plastics circular economy, as it allows recyclable all-polyethylene (PE) packaging.


NOVA Chemicals’ specialized HDPE resin, SURPASS® HPs153-A, produces 100% HD MDO films. Due to the broad orientation window, HPs153-A shows superior stability during production or manufacturing on commercial scale inline MDO blown film equipment. 

MDO-HDPE films can substitute BOPP and BOPET to make fully recyclable all-PE laminates with high stiffness to support registration for printing and converting, outstanding heat resistance to minimize shrinkage during packaging conversion, and exceptional clarity.

Advancing a Circular Economy

Oriented film structures qualify easy-to-recycle all-PE packaging to substitute conventional mixed material packaging, which is not recyclable. In addition, the orientation of PE films authorizes for property improvements otherwise not possible in blown or cast films, such as improved stiffness, toughness, and optical properties. Oriented films are perfect for food packaging, heavy-duty shipping bags, e-commerce, and other selective applications.

“According to consumer survey 2022 on plastics, packaging, and sustainability, half of the consumers aged 45 and under-reported deliberately purchasing products because the package included a made from recycled materials label,” explained Bill Pardo, food packaging market manager, NOVA Chemicals. “This research further supports our focus on oriented PE films for recyclability,” Pardo added.

World’s First BOPE-HD Resin

In 2021, NOVA Chemicals introduced its transformative BOPE-HD technology that allows manufacturing PE, recyclable multilayer film formats with significantly enhanced physical performance versus blown film. It was the world’s first HDPE resin explicitly created for the challenging tenter frame process. SURPASS® TX150-A allows an all-PE biaxially oriented print web, which can be laminated to an all-PE sealant web for the whole recyclability. 

Numerous film formulations have been successfully scaled up in the last year, from pilot-scale machines to commercial lines. NOVA Chemicals is performing with film producers across multiple regions to specify a global supply of commercial BOPE-HD films.
