An actual sustainable alternative of single-use plastic – Sugarcane bottle

Many companies are now focused on bio-plastic or bio-degradable manufacturing to end the solution of single-use plastic. Why companies started this research, I think everyone understands what type of upcoming dilemmas will occur?

Many Alternatives 

We can also debate on the sustainability of other sources of bottles making material such as paper, metals, leather bottles. Leather is now discontinued because of different sources of availability of packaging material, but in ancient times it was used as a primary packaging material to carry the water to drink. 

Bio-Based Plastic options

Now, in 21’s century, to carry the water, the primary packaging material is plastic. We all know why we want to rid of this issue. Plastic is Petroleum based product, which is not degradable and typically goes into a landfill and finds its way into the ocean. 

But, before going to further, there are unusual data about the usage of plastic.

  • In 2015 approximately 730,000 tons of plastic bags, sacks, and wrappers were produced (including PS, PP, HDPE, PVC & LDPE) in the USA only, but more than 87% of that plastic are never recycled, covering up in landfills, and the ocean.
  • Roughly 34% of dead leatherback sea turtles have ingested plastics.
  • The plastic generally used in jars, bags, and food containers contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors connected with adverse health effects, including cancers, congenital disabilities, and immune system suppression in humans and wildlife.
  • It holds 1,000 years for a plastic pouch to deteriorate in a landfill. Sadly, the bags don’t break down entirely but preferably photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and pollute the environment.
  • Chemical leachates from plastic wrappers reduce the growth of the world’s most essential microorganisms, Prochlorococcus, a marine bacterium that produces one-tenth of the world’s oxygen.

So, corporations commenced a way for the bio-plastic, but we all have to understand their feature before using.

The sugarcane bottles are composed of sugar cane, which is a renewable resource. This signifies they need less water to produce than single-use bottles. And even sugarcane bottles are carbon-neutral, recyclable, and, best of all, totally reusable.

The bottles are produced entirely of sugar cane. The sugar cane is chosen because it’s a low-impact crop, needing little to no fertilizer or further irrigation. Sugar cane, as the name refers, is where we get sugar. But that’s not all we get.

Once all the sweet essence is removed out, the leftover pulp, called bagasse, can then be used as a combustible fuel, feed, fertilizer, or in our case, converted into durable plant-based plastic.
