Clariant launches Desi Pak® ECO with new bio-based moisture-adsorbing packets

As a company that prioritizes sustainability, Clariant has taken another step toward improving the environmental impact of desiccants. They have introduced new plastic-free Desi Pak ECO moisture adsorbing packets to their existing range of natural clay solutions. These highly absorbent solutions are responsibly mined and provide manufacturers and distributors with a reliable way to safeguard sealed packaged goods from moisture damage. This move by Clariant underscores its commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices in the chemical industry.

These moisture-adsorbing packets are one-of-a-kind and use innovative technology. They’re made from bio-based paper crafted from sustainably grown raw materials. In addition, water-based inks and adhesives are used during production.

Packets of bentonite clay come in various sizes, ranging from 1 gram to 33 grams, with custom sizing available. Our clay is sourced responsibly and undergoes minimal processing to ensure high quality. Compared to synthetic options, our granulated high-grade bentonite clay is highly efficient in adsorbing moisture in common packaging conditions.

“Moisture control has an integral role in the supply chain in preserving the quality and integrity of products sensitive to moisture and humidity. Moisture-related damage has a known environmental impact, creating waste through discarded goods and emissions associated with replacing damaged goods,” comments Ryan Grauer, Head of Sales, Marketing, & Technology, Cargo & Device Protection, Clariant Adsorbents & Additives. “With the increased demand for packaging solutions with a lower carbon footprint, we are excited to offer customers the option of bio-based paper packets that deliver the trusted protection performance of our naturally-occurring highly-adsorbent bentonite clay desiccant.”

Clariant has introduced the New Desi Pak ECO packets to their extensive collection of Desi Pak desiccant packets and bags. These packets have been awarded the EcoTain label, which acknowledges their exceptional sustainability benefits.

The Desi Pak ECO product underwent a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to determine its environmental impact. The study focused on the use of responsibly-mined bentonite clay desiccant that is manufactured in the United States. The LCA findings revealed that the product has a lower carbon footprint than synthetic desiccants, primarily due to its less complex production process. Furthermore, using bentonite clay results in lower energy consumption during production and significantly less water consumption for raw materials production.

To further help customers reduce their own Scope 3 emissions, Clariant extended the sourcing of raw materials with a lower environmental impact to include transport packaging. The carton packaging used to transport Desi Pak ECO is recyclable and made from sustainably grown raw materials. Further, Desi Pak ECO comes packaged with cobalt-dichloride-free (CDF) humidity indicator cards.

Desi Pak ECO packets contribute to adequate moisture control and lowering carbon emissions associated with producing and transporting packaging materials for various applications. Examples include clothing, textiles, automotive, machinery, tools, nutraceuticals, and foods. On request, Desi Pak ECO packets are available with clay desiccant that complies with relevant U.S. FDA (21 CFR) and with U.S. Pharmacopeia USP <670> testing requirements for Auxillary Packaging Components.
