New CANUPAK reduces carbon emission by 71% – Alpla
The packaging and recycling expert ALPLA has discovered a carbon-optimized prototype as a showcase for coming products with its innovative Canupak beauty care packaging.
rHDPE – Ultra Light
The ultralight packaging technique with a bottle produced entirely of rHDPE highlights the company’s global sustainability strategy. ALPLA is thus presenting its customers with further potential to decrease emissions and expertise for future developments.
The carbon consumption is Almost 71% less than with similar packaging types, the entire recyclability of the bottle and cap, and a weight of around just 14 grams (for a 250 ml bottle) – with its ultralight Canupak packaging system, the international packaging, and recycling business ALPLA has learned carbon-optimized packaging for the field of beauty care. The bottle is produced entirely of recycled HDPE (rHDPE) sourced from the company’s factories in the EU. It is also made solely using renewable energies.
Canupak is an excellent example of how the possibility of minimizing emissions can be analyzed with high-quality packaging systems. ‘We are gradually decreasing carbon emissions and extending our expertise across the board of procedures, from design and production to logistics. The carbon-optimized Canupak is the subsequent milestone on the route to the sustainable packaging of the future,’ emphasizes Karina Pölzl, Innovation Project Manager at ALPLA.
Partnerships for solutions of the future
The carbon footprint was estimated in collaboration with ClimatePartner. The product carbon footprint (PCF) includes all the emissions throughout a product’s life cycle, including its disposal. The scopes of package contents, retail, and use phase were not considered as these are not relevant to the climate effects of packaging.
As no clear criteria exist for climate-neutral products and offsetting certificates, ALPLA concentrates on lowering emissions within its sphere of influence. ‘We are concentrating on other optimizing our products and on the highest recyclability based on a design for recycling, and are on the lookout for partners who wish to take the next step in reducing their carbon footprint together with us,’ reports Karina Pölzl.
