Advances Base Paper Technology to substitute Plastic and Film Packaging – Ahlstrom

Ahlstrom has identified a technology that enables the production of highly developed base papers vital to meeting the barrier requirements of flexible packaging while benefitting from the end-of-life advantages of paper. With its unique capabilities and extensive range of technical applications, Ahlstrom can create some of the most robust base papers currently available.

Zack Leimkuehler, Vice President of Business Development for Ahlstrom, has stated that paper substrates can be optimized to take advantage of cellulose’s intrinsic properties. Cellulose provides a reliable barrier, and when combined with highly-developed base papers, it can yield enhanced barrier properties.

Paper is an excellent choice for flexible packaging applications due to its impressive flexibility, folding characteristics, and ability to be printed. In addition, paper is easy to seal and glue and can withstand challenging converting processes. It also can bond with other structures through lamination.

Ahlstrom’s extensive research has enabled them to develop the base paper further to unlock the sustainability benefits of utilizing paper for flexible packaging applications. The base paper’s development and optimization have also significantly improved the paper’s barrier properties.

Leimkuehler noted that their base papers, which they have developed and continue to refine, provide the most effective solution for creating flexible packaging with combined barrier technology. The end-use packaging applications recently commercialized by our company are now the first to display all the essential characteristics necessary for replacing traditional plastic-based structures.

Secret code of packaging – its pack-aging

Our company has successfully introduced FluoroFree technology, a substitute for Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), which offers grease-barrier capabilities comparable to those of its predecessors. By leveraging the knowledge of sustainable packaging solutions, a traditional pet food bag can now be outfitted with recyclable materials capable of preserving freshness and storage. This development has unlocked the potential for a greener solution.
