Novolex announced that it had launched a new Chattanooga, Tenn. production line to manufacture compostable cold beverage cups produced from plant-based plastic.
PLA – Plastic Cup
The clear cups are created using polylactic acid (PLA), a plastics polymer produced from starch-based corn, sugarcane, and wheat straw. Will prepare the cups from Novolex brand Eco-Products, a leading provider of foodservice packaging assembled from renewable and recycled sources.
“PLA looks, acts and operates similar to a traditional cleared plastic, yet this is 100% compostable in industrial compost facilities,” said Adrianne Tipton, Chief Technology Officer of Novolex. “It is one more further sustainable alternative that we are happy to offer our customers.
“At Novolex, we are concentrated on a future where the packaging we make is recyclable or compostable,” Tipton added.
The latest manufacturing line, established at the Novolex manufacturing complex in Chattanooga, highlights the state-of-the-art technology of some of the world’s leading thermoforming and extrusion material suppliers.
The environmental advantages of PLA products are twofold. Head, they are made from renewable sources like corn that can be grown again and again. Next, PLA products are third-party BPI-certified compostable, indicating that the products can be turned into fertile soil instead of going to a landfill.
“We are creating cups created from plants that, later using, can be composted to improve plants grow again,” stated Ian Jacobson, President of Eco-Products. “It is part of our dedication to work with our customers to fulfill their Zero Waste goal, a success for both our customers and the environment.”
