A breakthrough innovation by HERMA, Label paper material from the grass

The label paper material from the grass is a significant element of the world‘s most eco-friendly paper. These fibers for paper processing & production is a resource-friendly and produces minimal CO2, compared with paper manufactured from virgin fiber or even recycled cellulose.

Since 2017, Label paper material from the grass has broadly used for numerous kinds of food packaging. And have got a lot of consideration from companies assigned to sustainable packaging.

The new label made from grass, which is HERMAnature fieno (grade 340). It allows customers also to employ special sustainability essentials to labels. The composition of grass papers having special grade pellets, which developed and patented by a German company from the Rhineland.

Grass fibers treated mechanically, needing no chemicals. Comparative to wood pulp processing, this ends in energy savings of 97 percent and water conservations of 99 percent. And the grass produces from local areas; logistics costs also minimized. And it is resulting in CO2 conservations of up to 75 percent. And the last, CO2 savings amount to a significant sum of 20 to 25 percent.

Excellent printability on the grass paper HERMA

The new label material grass HERMAnature fieno includes a 30% sustainable source. In origin, it treated like conventional paper and allows excellent printability in offset and flexo printing. “As it is a natural product, its color can vary,” says Dr. Ulli Nägele, Head of Research and Development at HERMA.

But blended with the material’s somewhat rougher surface, this promptly and credibly signals to the customer that this is sustainable packaging material.” An extra advantage: the grass paper carries no allergens that are subject to EU labeling terms noted in the regulation (EU) 1169/2011, such as fish or nut products. Consequently, grass paper labels ideally fit for use with food and cosmetics. To sustain this advantage, HERMAnature fieno provided with the 62A adhesive, which is becoming for direct contact with dry and moist foodstuffs as well as oily foodstuffs with an improvement factor of 3 or more according to the regulation (EU) 10/2011.

And also, having the properties of 62A adhesive is a durable adhesive for regular use with superior adhesive qualities on a wide range of surfaces. The adhesion properties are very high, both on polar and non-polar surfaces (such as PE). It gives excellent water protection and particularly good resistance against light, heat, and aging.

Proven sustainability

The environmental advantage of grass paper has supported by science. Within the structure of this similar life cycle assessment, grass-based cellulose does considerably better than the alternative wood-based sulfate cellulose and recycled fiber.

In terms of energy and water uses, acidification potential, and emissions perspective“, say the authors of a 2017 life cycle assessment created by the International Centre for Sustainable Development in Sankt Augustin, Germany. “In a special, the low fuel, and energy use when production resulting from short transport distances is certain for the environmental advantage of grass paper.” The grass can, for instance, and grown on eco-friendly benefit areas relatively near to the paper mills – thereby, it does not struggle against food cultivation.
